This is the last Gmail for mobile Java release, which is no longer available from Google. Compared with Mail for Google 1.5 it adds:

Support for multiple Gmail and/or Google Apps accounts.

Offline capability. You can use Gmail to read emails that you previously downloaded even when you have no signal. You can also compose new emails with no coverage. When you hit "Send", instead of complaining about the lack of connectivity, Gmail will hold the newly composed email and send it when you move back into a area with coverage.

Polling, Gmail will check for new email periodically, approximately every 5 minutes when it's in the foreground and every 20 minutes when running in the background.

Alerts, when new mail arrives Gmail will alert you. However it only vibrates once when a new email arrives, which is easy to miss.

Type: Freeware
Vendor: Google
iDEN Compatible: (tested on i776): No (hangs on startup)

A note taking app that lets you send notes as text messages. The SMS sending function worked on the CDMA Motorola Rambler but not an iDEN Motorola i776. On the i776, it says the message was successfully sent but no message arrives on the other phone

The best thing about this app is that it's the first note taking app that works on Boost phones and has a way to get the notes off the phone to a PC or another phone. Too bad that feature doesn't work on the iDEN phones.

A disadvantage of NoteHax is that, unlike gbJotPad, and Mini NotePad, if you suspend and resume the app while editing a note you will lose any unsaved changes.

Supported iDEN phones: All Falcon series with Java (i776, i465, i290, i475, i856, i9, etc.)

The app "NoteHax" (16 KB) is ready to download or send to your phone as NoteHax.

There are no obvious changes so I can't say what's new in this version athough I suspect that there are some performance and stability enhancements.

A fast and powerful spreadsheet app. Supports formulas using Excel syntax.

Supported data types: decimal, currency, percentage, date/time, boolean and string.

Supported operators: addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), division (/) , power (^), equal to (=), not equal to (<>), greater than (>), less than (<), greater than or equal to (>=) and less than or equal to (<=).

Supported functions and constants: SUM, IF, AND, OR, NOT, ABS, SIN, COS, TAN, ASIN, ACOS, ATAN, POWER, LOG, LN, EXP, SQRT, INT, ROUND, COUNT, AVERAGE, RAND, NOW, TODAY, DATE, TIME, DATEVALUE, TIMEVALUE, YEAR, MONTH, DAY, HOUR, MINUTE, SECOND, PI and E.

MiniExcel worked very well on the i776 and Rambler. One thing to watch out for on the iDEN phones is that if you suspend the app without saving your current sheet you will lose all the data you entered.

The only key mapping issue I noticed was on the i776 where you have to use the Call key instead of the OK button to open a cell for editing.

A spreadsheet app. Doesn't support formulas. On the iDEN phones the left and right arrow keys don't work to go from one column to another. A workaround is to use the "Goto" menu option to jump to a cell in another column.

BoostApps Forum member nishruu found this updated version of gCalSync. The old version had stopped working for me and many others. This one more or less works although it seems to fail to sync a few of my events. I'm trying to figure out if there is a pattern to which ones it syncs and which ones it doesn't.

It's open source app that synchronizes Google Calendar with your phone's built in calendar. Although it's buggy and slow it's the only app of any kind I've found that synchronizes the calendar on Motorola iDEN phones with anything.

It asks permission to access user data a half a dozen times every sync with annoying beep each time. You can eliminate the beeping by switching to a profile that has Volume > Data set to 0.

It only syncs event name, time and alarm. It does not sync location or description. This app probably doesn't work on the CDMA phones. At least it fails on my Rambler wit a "Authentication Failure...restricted API" error

Keep track of your car's gas milege. Enter details of each fill up and Fuel-O-Meter will display the consumption since last the fill up, over all consumption and cost per km. It also displays a graph showing you milage over time.

You are supposed to be able to change the units from kilometers/liters to miles/gallon but I couuldn't get the setting change to "stick". The app also displays cost as rupees/km with no way to change to dollars. But the units don't really matter, as if you enter gallons and dollars what ever it shows as km/liter and km/rs. is actually miles/gallon and miles/$.

BoostApps user Sophie Louise tipped me that PicoMail has been updated to version 2.0. Thanks Sophie.

Pico Wireless has not published a change list for this version which is surprising for a major version release. I'm not a PicoMail user so I'm probably missing something but the only change I noticed is a new option to enable touchscreen support (not tested as I don't have a Boost touchscreen Java phone).

PicoMail is a fast, free (ad-supported) POP, SMTP, IMAP email program for Java phones that works with most email providers including free Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail accounts. It features simple account configuration, unlimited email accounts, viewing of Word, Excel, PDF, WordPerfect, video and image attachments, viewing and sending HTML and plain text email messages, images, including PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP and TIFF formats, security via SSL, keyword search and automatic spam filtering.

Keep track of Bill Payments with Pay Manager mobile Java app.

An easy to use app for keeping track of upcoming payments. You enter the day and time that the payment is due and a description. The app plays an old school telephone ringer sound when your payment is due.

You also have to enter two other required fields, a 5 digit "Entity" number and a "9 digit "Reference" number. There's no help page or documentation so I don't know what these fields are for although I suspect they are related to a pay by SMS feature. I've emailed the vendor about these two fields and how the payment feature works and will update the post if they reply.

It looks like the alarm is supposed to work even if the app is suspended or not running. But on my Motorola i776 and Motorola Rambler it only goes off if the app is running in the foreground. Also, on the Rambler, PayManager often hangs and locks up my phone when I try to save a payment.

This seems like an easy to use app for keeping track of your payments. It would be a lot better if the alarm sounds worked when the app is suspended

The app "PayManager" (49 KB) is ready to download or send to your phone as filename:"PayManager".
